Three Chamberlain Square achieves CCS excellence

Three Chamberlain Square scores 100% in the Considerate Constructors Scheme, setting new standards in sustainability, community care, and workforce value.

Three Chamberlain Square has achieved the perfect CCS score

Paradise’s latest commercial building, Three Chamberlain Square, has scored 100% after being assessed by the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS).

The scheme, which aims to minimise the impact of large construction sites, seldom scores buildings as highly as this.

Three Chamberlain Square scored a maximum 15 points for each of the three main scoring criteria: Respect for the community, Care for the environment, and Valuing the workforce.

The award supports the overall design of the building which is highly sustainable and low carbon, as already recognised by its BREEAM Outstanding and NABERS 5* rating at design stage accreditations.

The CCS helps support the construction industry to raise its standards in being considerate constructors and by building trust with the public.

Crucially, the CCS score provides evidence of a cultural approach that is shared by everyone involved in a project, from client and main contractor to consultants, sub-contractors and suppliers.

Chris Hucknall, Project Manager, Sir Robert McAlpine, said: “Our work on Three Chamberlain Square has focused on safety, delivery and engagement. Each of these key strands have created tangible, positive results and we are all very proud to work on such a groundbreaking building for Birmingham. All of the sub-contractors, supply chain and wider consultant team have bought into the ethos behind this building as well as sharing a commitment to excellence in delivering it.”

Alex Housden, development manager at MEPC, added: “Three Chamberlain Square is a very special building for Paradise and for Birmingham. Its entire rationale has been about pushing the boundaries as far as possible. Achieving the highest possible score from the Considerate Constructors Scheme underlines this approach and validates all of our efforts towards creating a beacon in terms of a low carbon and SMART enabled regional commercial building.”

The CCS inspection observed a series of good practice examples across the Three Chamberlain Square site, namely:

  • Understanding and addressing concerns before starting on site
  • Minimising the impact of the project on the local community and individuals
  • Proactively managing complaints and feedback
  • Maintaining an organised, clean and tidy site, including management of waste
  • Reducing effects of nuisance, disturbance and intrusion on local communities
  • Ensuring anyone potentially impacted by the site is treated with care and consideration
  • The site promotes local employment and career opportunities
  • The site has worked hard to reduce carbon emissions with 99% of all waste recycled
  • Ongoing engagement and regular communication with local community
Supported local charities, community groups and careers bodies

The CCS scheme’s Code of Practice states that ‘constructors must manage their impact on their neighbours and the public to support a positive experience for all.’

Just one aspect of this is ensuring the site itself as well as its boundaries have been free of graffiti, rubbish, mud and material since work began in 2023.
