Success at the Building Better Healthcare Awards

Congratulations to our Healthcare team on winning three Awards and a High Commendation at this year’s BBH Awards.

Major wins at the 2024 Building Better Healthcare Awards highlight excellence in healthcare design and construction

We are thrilled to announce that our healthcare team has achieved remarkable success at the 2024 Building Better Healthcare Awards, held this month in London. This prestigious event, now in its 26th year, celebrates the most innovative projects and products in the healthcare sector.

Sycamore Building at Northgate Park Hospital

The Sycamore building at Northgate Park Hospital emerged as a standout winner, securing victories in two categories: Best External Environment/Landscaping Project and Best Healthcare Development between £25 million - £75 million.

This state-of-the-art facility, designed by Medical Architecture and built by Sir Robert McAlpine, provides inpatient accommodation for 72 male patients with a range of forensic mental health needs, including complex personality disorders and learning disabilities.

Developed around the concept of a ‘village campus’, the Sycamore building offers a variety of indoor and outdoor settings for relaxation and activity, ensuring a meaningful day for patients.

Pears Maudsley Centre for Children and Young People

The Pears Maudsley Centre for Children and Young People was crowned Best Mental Health / Dementia Care Development.

Delivered by IHP, the joint venture between VINCI Building and Sir Robert McAlpine, at South London & Maudsley Hospital (SLaM), this pioneering new centre is the first of its kind, is set to transform the lives of children and young people experiencing mental health challenges.

Developed to fit within the heart of the South London and Maudsley estate, the character and diversity of function that the building provides within a tight budget, is a credit to the whole team working on the project.

Aspen Wood Learning Disability Unit

Aspen Wood, a Learning Disability Unit also delivered by IHP for Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust in the North West, was Highly Commended in the Best External Environment/Landscaping Project category.

This innovative facility represents a complete redesign of the service, care environments, and overall approach to learning disability care. The design seamlessly combines SEN school and Scandinavian humane custodial design principles, creating LD-friendly spaces informed by valuable input from service users.

Stuart McArthur, Health Sector Director, Sir Robert McAlpine, said: “We extend our heartfelt congratulations to everyone involved in these outstanding projects. Their dedication and hard work have not only earned these accolades but also made a significant impact on the lives of many individuals in need of specialised care.”
