NHS staff take to bricklaying at Springfield University Hospital

Last month NHS staff from South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust took part in a bricklaying event to celebrate 12 months to go until the opening of two new mental health facilities in South West London, that will be at the heart of a new ‘Springfield Village’.

It's less than 12 months to go until the opening of two new mental health facilities in South West London, that will be at the heart of a new ‘Springfield Village’.

It comes ahead of a series of events happening across November to highlight progress on innovations and developments across the Trust.

The ‘Trinity’ and ‘Shaftesbury’ buildings at Springfield are scheduled for completion in Autumn 2022. These new facilities will be home to a range of mental health services that will support people across the region.

The names for the buildings were decided earlier this year as part of a community naming competition with members of the Trust pharmacy and forensic team submitting the winning entries.

Trust pharmacist Abz Salama, who took part in the event and chose the name Trinity, said:

“It was a pleasure to lay some of the final bricks for our new mental health facilities with our construction partners. I’m really looking forward to moving into our new home and we’re excited about what this means not just for our teams, but for the care we deliver to our patients and service users.”

Main contractor delivering the facilities, Sir Robert McAlpine, provided a short training session for Trust staff who helped to build one of the final facades of the Trinity building.

Set to open during 2022, the new facilities will provide high quality inpatient services that are designed to deliver the most modern mental health care in the country; giving people the best chance to recover in the best environment, and supporting Trust staff to deliver outstanding care.

The new buildings will form part of a new ‘Springfield Village’, which will also see the development of a new 32-acre park at Springfield Hospital, as well as the development of hundreds of new homes.

Ian Garlington, Director for the Trust’s Integrated Programme, which is delivering investments in NHS mental health services in South West London, said:

“We are delighted to see our new facilities taking shape and to have the opportunity for our teams to add some of the finishing touches. With just a year to go until Trinity and Shaftesbury open, we want to celebrate the hard work of our partners, staff, service users and patients who have helped to shape every aspect of their development.

“We are proud to be leading the way in breaking stigma by developing facilities that will sit at the heart of our Springfield Village, alongside a fantastic new 32-acre park, supporting the health and wellbeing of our whole community.”

Bricklaying at Trinity Building

uh so we're here today at one of the new
sites at Springfield hospital just doing
a bit of brick laying um kind of just
commemorating you know 12 months to go
until the new sites are open for use
my name is abs I'm one of the
pharmacists working at the trust I'm
here because I won the competition for
naming one of the buildings
so the non-forensic building the name I
chose was trinity which won the
competition the reason I chose trinity
being
the word trinity itself has quite a
historical background of tooting you
know
tooting backstage needs to be called
trinity road station there's still some
buildings you know some churches and
chapels cafes with the name trinity in
them so I just thought it sounded quite
nice for a building
um so yeah so we're here today to do
some bricklaying um and preparation for
12 months to go until the sites are open
