Maggie's Barts officially opened

Today saw the opening of Maggie’s Barts in London, the latest centre we have constructed for the cancer support charity.

Today saw the opening of Maggie’s Barts in London, the latest centre we have constructed for the cancer support charity.

Standing in the grounds of St Bartholomew’s Hospital close to Smithfield Market, as with all Maggie’s centres this latest building is designed by a celebrated architect, in this instance Steven Holl.

The charity’s centres are renowned as some of the most distinctive buildings in the country, and due to their groundbreaking designs often offer up a range of construction challenges.

Maggie’s Barts was no exception. Built on an extremely tight site surrounded by historic buildings, the ‘lantern-like’ centre is a geometrically complex structure, featuring curving junctions between glass, concrete and bamboo elements.

Undertaken under a construction management contract, Maggie’s Barts was constructed over the space of 18 months.
