On 2nd April, we had the privilege to host four MPs from the Housing, Communities and Local Government Select Committee for a visit at the Battersea Power Station Phase 3 site, as part of their inquiry on Modern Methods of Construction.
The Committee is a cross-party group that investigates policy areas and strategic issues and scrutinises the Government’s progress on these.
This visit was a great opportunity to demonstrate the innovative methods we are using on the Battersea site, such as BIM and off-site manufacturing.
Karen Brookes, Executive Director of People and Infrastructure at Sir Robert McAlpine, welcomed the visitors to our site briefing room. After a brief overview of the construction programme by Project Director, Alison Cox, a short presentation explaining off-site manufacturing by Package Engineer, Scott Kelly, and a demonstration of 4D models highlighting the benefits of Building Information Modelling (BIM) by BIM Manager, Peter Vlaar, the four MPs were taken on a walk around the perimeter of the Phase 3a site.
BIM Managers, Irina Gales and Peter Vlaar, showed them an “augmented reality” version of the site through portable devices, highlighting how this innovative approach promotes better collaboration, quality, health and safety, and overall improved project delivery.
The MPs were also keen to stop and chat with a few apprentices working on site to better understand their education trajectory, motivation and career aspirations.
We are very grateful to be given the opportunity to support the Housing, Communities and Local Government Select Committee with our knowledge and applications of modern methods of construction, and we thank those four MPs for taking the time to visit the Battersea Power Station Phase 3 construction site.
