M6 Junction 19 improvement scheme
Innovative design and engineering excellence delivered a first-of-its-kind ‘throughabout’ overbridge at M6 Junction 19 near Manchester.
Joint venture selected by Highways England to deliver ambitious £43 million overhaul at Junction 19 of the M6 aimed at reducing congestion between the motorway and the A556.
Junction 19 of the M6 near Knutsford is to benefit from a £43 million overhaul – with a new bridge through the existing roundabout and over the M6, creating a better flow between the motorway and the A556.
These improvements will speed up journeys and reduce congestion around the roundabout itself which already provides a free-flow link from the Knutsford and Bowdon bypass onto the southbound M6. There will also be improvements for pedestrians and cyclists.
Amey Sir Robert McAlpine – a Joint Venture between infrastructure support service provider Amey and construction and civil engineering company Sir Robert McAlpine - whom were awarded this scheme by Highways England, is one of 13 companies – known as Delivery Integration Partners (DIP) – who are currently working on 18 packages of projects, including the J19 scheme.
Robert Allen, Framework Partnership Director, Amey Sir Robert McAlpine, said: “We are delighted to have been selected to deliver the transformation of Junction 19 of the M6 through the Routes to Market Regional Delivery Partnership.
“Our collaborative approach to delivering this scheme forms part of a comprehensive upgrade of Manchester’s southern access, creating better journeys for those using this road network.”
Amey and Sir Robert McAlpine have a strong track record of working together over the last 23 years and was the first delivery integration team to jointly enter a Collaboration Charter with the whole supply chain to deliver value to clients and customers.
Amey is already responsible for maintaining the road network across the East Midlands on behalf of Highways England and is the provider for the Area 10 contract delivering highways maintenance services across the North West which mobilised in April this year.
Additionally, Amey Consulting is responsible for designing maintenance and improvement schemes for nearly 840 miles of strategic road network in Areas 13 and 14.
