A19 named England’s No1 road

The Strategic Roads User Survey by Transport Focus highlights the remarkable success of the A19 DBFO Project.

The Strategic Roads User Survey 2023/24, which is carried out annually by independent watchdog Transport Focus, voted the A19 the best “A” road in England, achieving the highest overall satisfaction rate of 85%.

The survey questioned over 9,000 road users about their recent journeys on motorways or major ‘A’ roads managed by National Highways, serving as a formal measure of user satisfaction and highlighting the exceptional performance of the A19 in the process.

Autolink Concessionaires (A19) Ltd, a Sir Robert McAlpine Capital Ventures project, is at the forefront of delivering the A19 DBFO (Design-Build-Finance-Operate) Contract. Autolink is responsible for the strategic planning and long-term investment decisions, ensuring that the A19 is maintained in optimum condition at all times, with minimal disruption to the travelling public.

Keith Polson, Project Director, Sir Robert McAlpine Capital Ventures, said: “The A19 Collaborative Team approach, which provides technical advice, design, and supervision for improvement and major maintenance projects, began at the inception of the DBFO contract and includes the client and members of the supply chain, fostering an environment of seamless integration and shared goals.”

Sir Robert McAlpine, which has extensive experience in Operations and Maintenance, delivers the A19 DBFO along with its integrated supply chain partners.

Andy Sinclair, Project Manager, A19 DBFO, Sir Robert McAlpine, commented: “This achievement is testament to the hard work and endeavours of everybody involved on the A19 project which operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It’s a true reflection of the whole team's dedication whether they are involved in the back-office support, dealing with incidents, gritting the road or repairing the bridges.”

The integrated management systems developed and used on the A19 DBFO include:

  • The Design, Management, Operation and Maintenance of Motorways and Trunk Roads (ISO 9001:2015)
  • Collaborative Relationship Management with Client and Supply Chain Partners  (ISO 44001:2017)
  • Asset Management (ISO 55001:2015)

The results of the Strategic Roads User Survey demonstrate that the A19 excelled in two specific categories, topping the table for satisfaction with journey time at 82% and road surface quality at 89%.

Supply chain partners commented: “We are thrilled to see the survey results. They reflect the hard work and dedication of everyone on the A19 Collaborative Team, which we are proud to be a part of.”

The success of the A19 DBFO project highlights the passion of the team as well as the importance of effective collaboration in maintaining critical infrastructure, ultimately delivering a superior experience for road users.
