Elizabeth Tower shortlisted for Building Innovation Award

Congratulations to our Special Projects team at Elizabeth Tower, whose project has been shortlisted for the prestigious Building Innovation Awards.

The Elizabeth Tower conservation project has been shortlisted for the “Most Innovative Restoration/Refurbishment Project" in the prestigious Building Innovation Awards 2023.

Standing tall for 160 years, Elizabeth Tower had endured the challenges of pollution, weather, and war damage. It was in need of repair, and our Sir Robert McAlpine Special Projects team was entrusted with the monumental task of restoring it to its former glory. The restoration of Grade 1 listed Elizabeth Tower marked the largest upgrade in the tower's history, spanning five years and encompassing a wide array of intricate refurbishment tasks.

Our project's success can be can be attributed to our commitment to innovation, demonstrated by our complex and rigorous Building Information Modelling (BIM) strategy. This strategy had two objectives.

Firstly, the creation of a reliable digital asset register incorporating both new and existing building fabric elements, and secondly, the development of an asset information model tailored for Facilities Management (FM) purposes.

The team went above and beyond to capture every detail, utilising cutting-edge digital technology including drones and a point cloud survey to build a meticulous model of the tower. This allowed us to document information about the tower's assets, particularly those in the façade and roof. The roof alone consisted of a staggering 3,433 unique components, all of which had to be carefully removed, restored off-site, and then carefully reinstalled.

Wishing the best of luck to the team for the awards ceremony on 12th October at Kimpton Clocktower Hotel, Manchester.
