Mekha Rajesh, Graduate Civil Engineering
Growing up, Mekha had a fascination with the STEM sectors, which ultimately paved her way into completing a Masters degree in engineering and then joining Sir Robert McAlpine as a Civil Engineer.
As a part of our ‘Meet the Team’ series, we sat down with Quantity Surveyor, Dane O’Kine, to learn more about his route to construction and what drew him to joining our business.
Can you share your journey and experience with Sir Robert McAlpine so far?
I’ve been in my current role since I joined in 2022. I’m a Quantity Surveyor working on the Derbyshire Mental Health Scheme across Kingsway Hospital and Chesterfield Hospital.
What initially attracted you to work for SRM?
Sir Robert McAlpine is a well-known tier 1 contractor. I was working in Birmingham at the time and slowly saw One Centenary Way come up from the ground. I’d see the large green cranes and think I need to look at job opportunities at SRM. Green is also my favour colour so it felt like a bit of a sign!
Are there any values or principles of Sir Robert McAlpine that resonate with yours?
The business is inclusive, collaborative and respectful. It feels like a family business, everyone’s encouraged to get involved - regardless of role, background etc - we’re all treated fairly and everyone’s supportive of one another.
How does Sir Robert McAlpine support professional development and growth for its employees?
The values the business has around diversity and inclusion, welcoming everyone and being supportive are replicated within the professional development it offers. There’s a lot of opportunity for growth.
Do you have a plan for your development?
I really enjoy every day of this job. My team are great and there’s so much to do and learn. I’ve just signed up to do my APC-RICS to become a Chartered Surveyor so for the next two-years I’ll be focusing on that.
In terms of your role, what made you apply for the role and take this kind of route into construction?
I was already working as a Quantity Surveyor when I applied for my current role. The company I was working for prior to joining SRM was a lot smaller. Joining the business was a big career moment for me. Being part of a larger company has already given me more opportunities, chances to learn and develop.
Is there anything about working at SRM that stands out to you?
I’d say that everything we do feels like it’s part of a wider team effort. We’re each supported to grow in our individual areas but overall, we’re all focused on delivering for the business.
