A new school of music provides state-of-the-art facilities for pupils at this renowned Manchester institution.
General Information
A new six-storey school of music was constructed adjacent to the existing Chetham’s campus. Providing a mix of music and academic facilities, the building incorporates two performance spaces, four ensemble rooms, 50 music teaching rooms, 62 practice rooms, offices, admin space and an outreach centre.
The building wraps around a central courtyard providing views south to Cathedral Gardens and is linked to the existing campus via a bridge built across the culverted River Irwell.

To optimise programme and quality, around half of the 500,000 handmade bricks for the façade were formed into precast panels.
The fast-tracking of two prototype rooms enabled the team to test and inspect critical elements of workmanship, determine final design details and benchmark quality standards.
We worked in collaboration with our subcontractor and design team to develop all the timber acoustic products used, providing our client with an effective, attractive and cost-effective solution.
Chetham’s School of Music was honoured with a RIBA National Award and the RIBA Regional Buidling of the Year Award 2013. The project also received three awards, including Building of the Year, at the Manchester Society of Architects Design Awards 2013.
Our project team was recognised with a Bronze Considerate Constructors Scheme National Site Award in 2013.
