Our projects

Onward and upward for Newcastle International Airport

Over the last 40 years, we’ve helped Newcastle International Airport expand to meet growing demand.

Since building its original control tower in the 1980s, we have delivered a series of civil engineering projects for the airport.

This has given us an in-depth understanding of the airport's operations, helping us make sure any disturbance to staff and passengers is kept to a minimum.

We extended and modified the main terminal to allow for increasing flight volume. This created a single integrated terminal and improved passenger facilities without disrupting airport operations.

We have also improved access through work on perimeter roads, created fuelling areas and installed complex drainage systems.

More recently, working within the operational airfield, we constructed the airport's control tower. Incorporating the latest air traffic control systems, the tower is one of the most technically advanced in the UK. Reaching 46m, we made sure it was built rapidly and expertly while reaching the highest standards of safety.

Expertise

Working on an operational commercial airfield, it was important to get the control tower constructed quickly and safely.

To accurately plan construction sequencing, our in-house Design Group used computer modelling to create a 3D image of the tower. Then we reduced work at height by building the 45-tonne equipment room at ground level, before lifting it on to the top of the tower's central stem.
